Despite the searing heat, summer is a great time to conduct white-tailed deer surveys. Knowing basics about your deer herd such as density, sex ratio, and fawn crop is essential for management purposes. For properties greater than 500 acres, spotlight surveys are often the best tool while remote cameras are often used for smaller tracts.
Landowners desiring more flexibility in managing their deer herd will often use Texas Parks & Wildlife Department’s Managed Land Deer Permit (MLDP) program. Three levels of MLDP allow for liberalized doe harvest, a longer hunting season, and/or the use of permits for buck harvests. As one moves from Level 1 to Level 3, management efforts increase as does harvest flexibility.
Landmark Wildlife is happy to help landowners with spotlight or remote camera surveys as well as completing and filing MLDP applications. As part of the MLDP application, we will handle paperwork with Texas Parks and Wildlife. If you have any questions about deer surveys or the MLDP program, please do not hesitate to give us a call.
